Format of Parent/Child Class

In the Parent/Child class, parents and children spend the first part of the year learning and playing together in the classroom with teachers - one Parent Teacher and one Child Teacher. As the year progresses, and children become comfortable with their teacher in the classroom, parents transition out of the classroom and into their parent meeting, where the Parent Teacher facilitates discussion about parenting. This class is as much fun for parents as it is for children!

The Adults Role in the Classroom

  • Helping children engage with others or with materials.
  • Having conversations with children - asking real questions; waiting for responses; narrating observations; helping children interact with others.
  • Playing alongside and observing children - watching for children's goals; providing words for children's actions; copying children's efforts.
  • Focusing on and talking with children about what they are doing and thinking.

We help children engage in small challenges to stimulate their intellectual curiosity. It's generally adults who teach children that they should be frustrated if something is difficult to accomplish. At The Raleigh School children and parents learn that challenges make life interesting.
