The Raleigh School
Catching Up with Steve Sather
Retired TRS Teacher

Alternate text

Steve Sather was born in Dayton, Ohio at Wright Patterson Air Force base when his father was there serving in the Air Force. Steve's family moved to Dearborn Heights, Michigan when he was three; his dad was hired to teach Electrical Engineering at Wayne State University, his alma mater. His father Roy, mom Irene, sisters Jan and Judy and younger brother Scott lived in Dearborn Heights until Steve finished the 10th grade. Then the family moved to Livonia, Michigan about 17 miles away were Steve graduated from Churchill High School. Steve made his way back to Wayne State and began studying engineering. After two years, he transferred to Michigan State and switched his course of study to Recreation Management so that he could work for the Boys Club. (Steve was a Boys Club member from age 5 - 16). We caught up with him recently for some Q & A about his time at TRS.

What ages have you taught at The Raleigh School?

I assisted Mary Covington in third grade for three years and when TRS added a second third grade class, I took that lead position. Third grade is the only grade I have taught at TRS, but I also worked with kids in third, fourth and fifth grades through Science Olympiad for over thirteen years.

Describe something you especially enjoyed about teaching.

It has always been being with the kids, always. I worked with kids for 50 years, from my first days as a counselor in training at the Boys Club Camp on Harsens Island in Michigan when I was 15 years old. My favorite subjects to teach were math and science.

Did any family members attend TRS?

My daughter Hannah went to Raleigh Preschool and then The Raleigh School, graduating in 2007. I credit TRS for giving her the foundation to do well at Exploris, Raleigh Charter High School, North Carolina State (graduating in three years) and most recently graduating from NCSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 2022. Hannah is now working in Harrisonburg, VA as a food animal safety veterinarian.

What are you enjoying, now that you're retired?

I'm kind of surprised that I watch more TV than I ever had time or energy to do before. There are so many options and I have the time to watch a full movie, or binge a series like Stranger Things. I enjoy working in the yard and working on my house. I also enjoy visiting Norma Stewart and her husband Jim. Ted Storck and I see them once or twice a month and usually end up staying for hours catching up on current events and memories of being at the school together.

What do you miss about teaching?

Being with kids is what I miss the most. Teaching young children helped keep me young and I miss the daily interactions I had with the students in my classroom and through Science Olympiad. I miss having a daily purpose and being with other teachers, parents, and staff members too.

How do you still stay connected with TRS?

When I first retired, I kept in touch by continuing to coordinate Science Olympiad. With Covid, my opportunities were more limited, but I was here for a couple of graduations and drive-through CARnival. I try to get to the school for alumni get togethers and was in town for the 70th TRS tailgate in September and the school Carnival held a few weeks later this past fall.

During this interview, Steve made a powerful statement that truly reflects the type of person and teacher that he is, "One of the best things I have enjoyed about being a teacher is taking a group of 22 kids from the first day of school until the last day of school and seeing and experiencing the growth they made as students and people."

TRS and every student and family who passed through his classes were lucky to experience his kind and caring nature. We are glad that retirement is treating Steve well and are always happy to see him back on campus!

Kind Hearts - Giving Back

Two Raleigh School alumnae recently participated in community service projects.

Class of 2020

One of our recent graduating classes, those students who comprise the Class of 2020 had an unusual graduation...they were not able to enjoy the traditional pomp and circumstance, but celebrated by driving through campus instead. While this parade brought out much creativity and some sweet rides, we have heard that this class would enjoy getting together on campus for another special celebration.

The Class of 2020 is invited to come back to TRS on Sunday, March 19th for some TLC, Raleigh School style. We hope the families in this class will plan to attend and will enjoy getting together!
