Our Mission: The Raleigh School is a cooperative community of children, parents and teachers that fosters a love of learning in an atmosphere of challenge, inquiry and respect.

Apply to TRS

Our best advice to prospective families is, apply early. Many families are surprised to learn that our enrollment timeline begins the year before the school year in question.

We are now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 school year.

Completed applications received by Monday 28 December with all supporting documentation will receive first consideration. After that date applications will be considered on a rolling basis if space permits.

virtual information/q&A sessions - New!

One of the most important pieces of our admissions process is welcoming parents to tour our campus to see our children and teachers in action. We believe it is critical that families come to know our school and mission before making a commitment to The Raleigh School. Given all the steps we are taking to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and to keep our campus community healthy, we are unfortunately unable to offer campus tours this year. We invite you to look through our website and view our virtual tours to get a sense of our campus. In response to the unique times we find ourselves in, we are requiring all families to attend one of our virtual information sessions as part of our admissions process this year.

You'll be able to schedule your session during the application process or call our Admissions Office at (919) 534-0758 and we'll reserve a place for you.

Preschool & Elementary
Additional dates will be offered in the Fall for families interested in enrollment in the 2022-2023 school year.

placement by age (Preschool & Kindergarten)
We place rising preschool and kindergarten students according to their age on August 31 in the year of admission.

Example: A child who is four years old on August 31, 2020 will be considered for placement in the preschool fours class.

priority order

As a general rule, we consider applicants in the following order:

  1. Re-enrolling students
  2. Siblings of current students
  3. Students who are new to TRS

Parents will be notified of first round application decisions on February 12, 2021 for Preschool and Kindergarten applicants, and February 26 for 1st - 5th Grade applicants.

Once a class is fully enrolled, subsequent accepted applicants will be placed in a wait pool. As vacancies occur, we go first to our wait pool to fill openings. Many factors are taken into account when the Admissions Team decides which of the wait pool candidates will receive an offer.

Parents will be asked to rank their class choices in order of preference. If we are unable to offer the first choice of class, we will place your child where we have space, and simultaneously place your child in the wait pool for your preferred class or classes.

supporting Documentation

During the application process you'll be prompted to provide a copy of your child's birth certificate and vaccination records.

Applicants for Preschool 4s Through 5th grade: We also require a copy of your child's latest progress report and confidential teacher evaluations. The online application will guide you through the steps and provide a checklist of required documentation.

CLASS VISITS FOR elementary applicants

Applicants who have submitted completed applications by December 28, 2020 will be invited to to attend a classroom visit. This is a key part of our elementary admissions process. We take great care to ensure the visit is a positive and enjoyable experience for the visiting student.

Applicants who apply after that date will be invited to visit only if there is a possible opening.

Kindergarten applicants are required to attend a kindergarten applicant visit, typically scheduled in January. This two-hour visit is structured like a preschool class, with center time, circle time, snack, and outdoor play.

Applicants for 1st - 5th grade are required to attend a two-day visit in a classroom with the applicant's current grade cohort. The applicant will be asked to participate in all activities to the best of his/her ability during the visit.

While the school is currently closed to visitors due to COVID-19, virtual class visits will be arranged for candidates where vacancies are available.

The non-refundable application fee is $90 per child.

The most amazing thing about this is that my children were in an environment that has fostered a love of learning. Not only is the learning fun but the teachers allow the kids to be kids and use their own creativity. No matter where they go to middle school I believe that TRS has set the foundation of how teachers should treat students and how people treat people.
