Field Trips
Elementary Field Trips
Children at The Raleigh School enjoy many opportunities to learn about their world. Some field trips are local – especially for the younger students. Others might involve an overnight trip.
Students in the elementary grades attend overnight field trips with their class beginning in second grade. These field trips are connected to the curriculum the students are covering in school and allow them to extend their learning beyond the classroom. One parent often attends the field trips along side their child. Students look forward to these trips with great anticipation. The field trips include:
- Sound to Sea at The Trinity Center in Pine Knoll Shores, NC in second grade. This experience allows students the opportunity to explore different habitats at the ocean including wading through the sound to collect animal life and dissecting a squid.
- Campus overnight in third grade. This event culminates the students’ study of the sun and moon. Students share myths they have written about the sun and moon around a camp fire, observe the stars with the Raleigh Astronomy club, and visit inside an inflatable planetarium set up on campus.
- YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in fourth grade. Students travel to Black Mountain, NC as they explore the Piedmont region of our state. Students play cooperative games such as predator-prey, learn how to make candles, engage in pottery activities and try out the high ropes course.
- Washington, DC in fifth grade. The students spend several weeks at school researching various landmarks in Washington, DC and determining their relevance in history. The students then create travel brochures for their trip and serve as the “experts” as they visit the landmarks in our nation’s capitol. Students visit the National Archives, take a monument tour in the evening, and participate in a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
Field Trips for Kindergarten, First Grade
First grade and kindergarten students visit places that connect with the themes of their curriculum. Some examples include: The Talking Forest, the kitchen of a busy restaurant, a local garden store, The North Carolina Zoo, The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina Museum of Art.
Field Trips for Preschool
Preschool children begin going on field trips when they are three years of age. These trips are related to the different themes students investigate and offer opportunities for hands-on discovery and exploration of materials. Preschool field trips may include:
- Pond Study at Laurel Hills
- Planetarium
- Kite Flying at local parks
- Farmers Market
- Strawberry Picking
