Board of Trustees
As an independent school, The Raleigh School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. A board of trustees governs the school and meets monthly. The board is responsible for the management of the property, affairs, and business of the school as well as strategic planning and policy making. The trustees are responsible for policy decisions that ensure the long-term viability and stability of the school. An annual meeting is held each April for the primary purpose of electing officers and trustees. Other decisions may be presented for membership discussion and decision. Occasionally special meetings are called at other times during the year.
The Raleigh School is steered by an administrative leadership team that is responsible for the programs, personnel, and day-to-day running of the school. The leadership team includes the head of school, elementary director, elementary office manager, preschool director, preschool office manager and admissions coordinator, business manager, staff accountant, director of elementary admissions, director of development, school counselor, and data entry associate.
Bud Lichtenstein, Head of School
Bud earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Masters of Liberal Studies, with a thesis on the History of Progressive Education, both from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Prior to The Raleigh School, Bud was Director of The Common School in Amherst, Massachusetts, serving in that position for 17 years. Previous positions also include House Leader and Founding Curriculum Planner at Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, Arizona; Assistant Head of School and Director of College Guidance, as well as History and Outdoor Education teacher at The Hammonasset School in Madison, Connecticut; and elementary teacher with the Simsbury Board of Education in Simsbury, Connecticut. Bud became Head of School at The Raleigh School in July 2011.
Elizabeth Gilleland, Preschool Director
Elizabeth graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from Furman University in South Carolina, and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from North Carolina State University. Prior to joining The Raleigh School faculty, Elizabeth had nine years experience as a preschool director. Her teaching experience included five years working as a preschool and elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Georgia as well as teaching college level psychology at North Carolina State University, Meredith College, and Duke Talent Identification Program. She is a former Raleigh School parent and joined our staff in 1997.
Mary Golden, Elementary School Director
Mary earned a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Elementary Education from Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire. She completed the Master’s Level Certificate Program for Emotional Handicaps at the University of New Hampshire where she also studied School Administration. Mary worked in special education and regular class settings in New Hampshire for eight years. She taught sixth grade at The Duke School for two years, and was a special education teacher at Martin Middle School. Mary is a former Raleigh School parent and joined our staff in June 2003.
Heather Schonfeldt Campbell, Director of Finance and Operations
Heather received a Bachelor in Business Administration from Charleston Southern University and a Masters in Business Administration from East Carolina University. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the AICPA and NCACPA. Heather’s work experience includes teaching small business courses at Durham Technical Community College and providing management consulting and finance director level services to local and national non-profit organizations. . She is a Raleigh School parent, and joined our staff in June 2010.
Diane Cloos, Database Coordinator
Diane earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Management from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. Diane worked in the finance industry in the Chicago area for eleven years where she reconciled and reviewed financial data and maintained database systems for trade exchange fees. Diane joined The Raleigh School staff in May 2011.
Dhruti Dholakia, School Counselor
Dhruti received her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from North Carolina Central University and a Masters in Counselor Education from North Carolina State University. Her work experience includes Director of Education at Little Star Day School in Switzerland, Program Coordinator and teacher at Bright Horizons in Raleigh, conducting professional development and parent education workshops at Hands On Learning in Cary, Early Intervention Specialist, parent educator, and therapist at KidScope in Chatham and Orange Counties, and an internship at Joyner Elementary in Raleigh. Dhruti is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPCA) and holds National Counselor Certification. She joined our staff in August 2013.
Karen Green, Director of Development
Karen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Marshall University in West Virginia. Her previous work experience includes special events manager, grant writing, and volunteer coordinator for the National MS Society. As a former Raleigh School parent, Karen served on the board of trustees. She joined our staff in July 2006.
Ling Kartawira, Staff Accountant
Ling earned a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Trisakti University in Jakarta, Indonesia. She earned a Masters in Accounting from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Ling’s work experience includes auditor for Arthur Anderson, accounting technician for North Carolina State University, and accounting clerk for the Autism Society of North Carolina. Ling is a former Raleigh School parent and joined our staff in June 2005.
Anu Mannar, Director of Admissions
Anu earned a B.A. in journalism from the University in North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Prior to joining The Raleigh School, Anu worked for IBM and The News & Observer and also was home with her two sons for several years. Her background includes journalism, marketing and strategy. She is a Raleigh School parent and joined our staff in 2015.
Irene Milewski, Preschool Office Manager and Admissions Coordinator
Irene studied Business Administration at High Point University in Winston-Salem. Prior to joining The Raleigh School faculty, Irene spent 14 years as executive assistant to the CEOs of Hospice Savannah and Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem. Irene joined The Raleigh School staff in 2007.
Norma Stewart, Elementary Office Manager
Norma graduated from WC-UNC - Greensboro’s Commercial School. She and her husband owned and operated a consulting engineering firm in Jacksonville, North Carolina for thirty years. Norma is a former Raleigh School grandparent and joined our staff in January 1997.
